There are eight teams remaining in the PIAA Quad-A state tournament after Monday's first round, and Indiana High is one of them after a very long bus trip and a win in East Pennsboro. Jake Slebodnick has the story.
Coach Bill Thompson says East Pennsboro was a stiff challenge, but the WPIAL has done well against District 3 in the past and he believed Indiana could win.
Thompson says he knew it was a gamble to throw three pitchers, but Garrison Dougherty, Gavin Homer, and Connor Geesey made it pay off.
The PIAA has not yet announced a game site or time for Thursday's quarterfinal game against District 6 champion Bellefonte, which beat Latrobe, 10-9.
Thompson says he will call Latrobe coach Matt Basciano for a scouting report on Bellefonte.
Indiana catcher Steven Budash was looking for the right pitch when he launched his fourth inning home run.
Budash says Indiana has dedicated its season to late coach Todd McGee, who passed away in March in Florida.
In other Quad-A action besides Indiana's win and Latrobe's loss, Montour fell to Erie Cathedral Prep, 6-5; Hopewell was a 3-0 winner over Northern Lebanon; Hanover downed Mifflinburg, 6-0; Dallas beat Esperanza, 12-1; Montoursville was a 7-5 winner over Blue Mountain; and Archbishop Wood topped Pope John Paul II, 15-5.
