Good Samaritans help tow driver out of flooded Spring Street Subway

Sep 02, 2023Sep 02, 2023

Two Good Samaritans in a box truck helped tow a car out of the flooded Spring Street Subway in Reading Tuesday afternoon.

The rescue took place just before 5pm after severe thunderstorms moved across the County, quickly dumping heavy rain and a small amount of hail.

Due to poor drainage, the Spring Street Subway is often closed following heavy rain with barricades placed across the road. According to initial emergency radio traffic, police had the street blocked off with officers stationed at both ends.

After becoming stuck midway, two Good Samaritans in a box truck volunteered to rescue the two occupants in the vehicle before firefighters arrived on-scene. Approaching the vehicle they found that the driver and passenger were sitting in water, but otherwise ok. The two were unable to exit the vehicle on their own.

The Good Samaritans quickly attached a tow strap between the two vehicles and pulled the car out of the flooded roadway.
